What would you do if you couldn’t go to the hospital, school, and couldn’t be what you want to be? During the 1860’s many blacks didn’t have this freedom.

In 1860 there were 476,000 free blacks in the United States and 221,000 lived in the North. Most slaves lived in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the smallest number of slaves lived in New England. This was Mid-Atlantic states. By 1800 most Northern Blacks were Free. Were blacks equal compared to the whites in the North? Northern freed blacks were not as equal as the whites because they dealt with economic, social, and religious problems.

Not everyone had the dream or choice of what they want to be. A young African-American had said, “No one will employ me; white boys won’t work with me (DOC C). Blacks got the opportunity to go to school and get a job but they weren't satisfied or appreciated during the time (DOC C). Many Blacks worked hard in school but didn’t get a good job which wasn’t fair (DOC C) Blacks felt discouraged because they tried hard to succeed but they got treated harshly.

At school they can’t associate with whites at all or they will get some sort of punishment (DOC B). Blacks couldn’t marry a white, go to the hospital, and go to a restaurant that they wish to go to or enjoy (DOC B).
