The story starts out with Antonio, the main character/narrator, telling us about his first encounter with Ultima, The first chapter was about a dream he had about his own birth, and how Ultima helped chose what would happen when the two families could not decide what to do. In other words, she calmed an anxiety for his future, before he even knew how to speak. When he wakes up his mother confirms everything and makes it clear the path she wants him to take which then makes him anxious. Later on when he finally meets Ultima and shakes her hand he gets a feeling of power from her. She tells him she knew from the moment he was born they would grow to have a strong connection. The next chapter everyone discusses why thy are glad to have Ultima…show more content… When Antonio's father goes with them to search for Lupito, Antonio decides to follow them and end up finding him but he runs away. As Antonio's father tries to explain to everyone that Lupito is in shock, Lupito makes the mistake of shooting his gun when he hears them say something about Japanese soldiers, and end up getting shot by the pursuers. He then begs for Antonio's blessing before he dies. Antonio runs home and begins to pray when he realizes Ultima's owl was with him the whole time and calms down. When he goes inside his home he is met by Ultima who tells him wise words for judgement about who deserves to go to hell ad who doesn't. That night when he goes to bed, he dreams of his family trying to build his fathers castle in the hills and as they try to cross the river (where Lupito was shot) he hears a mournful voice calling for him. As his brothers fear it is the weeping woman he realizes it could Lupito calling for him so he calms the river and his brothers are then able to cross.When he wakes up he begins to wonder where Lupito's soul might end up, he wonders if God will forgive him or if the river carried away Lupito's soul
