A human mind is predestined to incessantly seek answers and understanding to inquiry’s that gradually build up, but what if life rebuffs these understandings? To whom or what can one turn? When will our unripe minds ever realize that the answers we seek are continuously being revealed in our lives through tentative actions and thoughts we unceasingly galvanize? We must begin to recognize that we ‘have been seeing only parts… and not looking beyond the great cycle’ (Ultima pg. 121) that binds these actions and thoughts. Roldolfo Anaya’s zaftig novel, Bless me, Ultima vividly employs how a six year old, Antonio Marez, becomes aware of such cycle over time from the way he ponders upon his dreams. Dreams that initially were thought of as mere replays of fragmented memories of his daily experiences ripen to become crucial subliminal messages, predestined to be inscribed in him to adumbrate a destiny that only the women who first helped him see light knew, a destiny that Ultima guided and protected from …show more content…
“Cease! she cried to the raging powers, and the power from the heavens and the power from earth obeyed her…” (pg. 120) We witness once again Ultima’s divine being sporadically intervene in Antonio’s dream as she lucidly conveys the grand power she holds over both earth and heaven as she ceases the turmoil that occurs around Antonio. Ultima assuages Antonio not only through her divine power but also through her majestic wisdom, a wisdom that helps Tony realize that he had “been seeing only parts...and not the cycle that binds us all” (pg.121) Ultima’s astute words allows Antonio to realize that the forces he once thought were opposing are actually dependent on each other for existence. Such understanding brought peace into a dream that initially consumed
