At the heart of every family tradition, there is a meaningful experience. In the book, Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, Antonio Marez Luna was raised from a traditional- Hispanic background of religion and agriculture. His parents, Maria Luna and Gabriel Marez, come to form their distinct backgrounds and conclude that their son, Antonio, will carry his destiny around one parent’s customs. The similarities these two parents have is wanting to have their beliefs and customs to be passed down for generations and Tony is the last son that can make it possible for Maria or Gabriel. The differences create a distinction between the Luna family, from Las Pasturas, are very religious and the Marez family, from El Llano, are vaqueros. Through the family traditions and customs that Antonio’s parents, Maria Luna and Gabriel Marez carry, Antonio has a determined destiny that involves one of his parent’s traditions. At the end of the novel, Gabriel makes a decision settle the differences that he and Maria were having about Antonio and he was just going to let Antonio go with the Lunas. “‘Perhaps it is the time we gave up the old differences-’ ‘Then maybe I do not have to be just Marez, or Luna, perhaps I can be both-’ I said,” (Anaya, 247). Ultima was aware of Antonio’s destiny and with her guidance, he learned a lot about what his destiny from either side can incorporate. It is concluded that Antonio’s destiny was to become “a man of learning” because he understands the lessons with the experiences that have come his way.
