Blind Ambition In Macbeth

Have you ever wanted something so badly you would do anything? Macbeth’s visions to become king have him murdering anyone in his way. This arrogant nature causes his eventual death. In the play Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses the motif of visions to demonstrate that blind ambition can lead to one’s downfall.

Macbeth sees a dagger in front of him waiting to be held. Duncan as king is the main person in Macbeth’s way to his ultimate goal.”Is this a dagger I see in front of me,with its handle pointing toward my hand?”(Shakespeare 2.1) This vision presenting itself as a dagger is promoting Macbeth’s murderous deeds. Showing that the visions are cause of his insane belief to do anything to be king. The feeling of guilt drives the visions.

(Shakespeare 3.4). When Macbeth is informed that his hitman killed Banquo he get’s scared. Visions of Banquo frightened Macbeth because of guilt he felt. Lady Macbeth also goes mad because of her and Macbeth’s deeds. She also begins her ultimate demise and insanity.(Rubbing her hands)”Come out, damned spot! Out, I command you! One,two. OK, it’s time to do it now- Hell is murky!- Nonsense,my lord, nonsense! You are a soldier, and yet you are afraid? Why should we be scared, When no one can lay the guilt upon us?- But who would have thought the old man would have had so much blood in him?”(Shakespeare 5.1) Lady Macbeth helps Macbeth helps Macbeth with the murder and has to clean it up. This continues to weigh on her conscious till she eventually kills herself.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth ultimately go crazy during the story. There guilt and Visions have the story going through crazy twists and turns. Proving when you have ambition it can drive you to do crazy things. Consequently causing madness. Macbeth’s ambition to become King leads to his ultimate
