World war II was a time of great uncertainty and terror, especially in Germany as white supremacy terrorized Europe during the 1940s. This phenomenon, known as the Holocaust took the lives of millions. ‘The Lottery’ is viewed as a horrific and controversial piece of literature, however, Jackson purposely includes the element of horror in order to exemplify other similar acts of barbarism occurring in society at the time. This is illustrated through the sense of normalcy portrayed in the story regarding the act of murder. Throughout the short story, the true nature of the lottery is unknown; one would even believe that it was a happy or joyous occasion. Jackson narrates, “The children assembled first, of course … Bobby Martin had already stuffed
