People today think of a hero as superman or batman with a cape flowing through the wind. But what is the true meaning of the word hero? In our society we hear the word hero a lot. We hear it on news stations and on television shows. When I think about the word hero I think about a person is who acknowledge for their great or brave acts. When you google the word hero the real definition is a man of distinguished courage or ability to be admired for his brave deeds (dictionary.com). Many people have different aspects on what heroes are.
From Bodega Dreams, Ernesto Quinonez explains a story about two different teachers and how students react to both. In the story, Mr.Blessington is a teacher who does not care about his students. In this poem, the narrator is centered around a hero. Hard Rock can be seen as a tough person but he is his own person. Everyone knows hard rock because they say “yeah, remember when he smacked the captain with his dinner tray?” (Knight 195). They see Hard Rock as a wide animal “the testing came to see if he was tamed” (22). Throughout this poem, we see a character who is not tamed, he is wild and he returns to prison. But some people see Hard Rock as a hero.
To sum everything up, a hero can be defined as anything. People may have a different definition for a hero than others. In both articles, we see a hero in a different world. In “Bodega dreams”, some people may call Mr. Tapia a hero and others may not. On the other hand, Hard rock from “Hard Rock returns to prison”, we see a beast which some people will call a her.
