This documentary by Bonnie Sherr Klein is a film about disability culture and how the power of art can transform an individual. It was centered around group of her disabled activist artist friends. They included an actor, a writer, a choreographer a painter, and herself as the filmmaker. They each had a strong desire for art and their differences seemed to bring them together. They overcame huge obstacles in their visible disabilities as well as invisible disabilities such as depression and learning disabilities to find and maintain their self-respect, dignity, and their identity. It also portrayed diversity and people from the LGBTQ community. At first, I am ashamed to say, that some of the people portrayed were repulsive and made me feel uncomfortable at times. Through their disabilities and arts they pushed back the demons of shame and humiliation. Each of them focused on accomplishments and how their disability inspired these accomplishments. Creativity flourished in their writings, paintings, speaking engagements, and the unique ways of moving while dancing providing an inspiration to disability instead of being in-spite-of disability. The film helped me see that even though each of them had a disability they could still go above and beyond in the craft that they were interested in and in some cases performed better than those of us without a disability. I now look at their disabilities through their eyes as an identity and inspiration for creativity. They are each redefining my perceptions of their individual disability and the rejection of stereotypes. I understand that disability is part of life for many people, but it does not have to stop them from attaining what they desire as seen in each of these artists
