In the 1980s Bonnie Tyler has been known for a lot of top hit singles. Even though she did help create numerous songs herself, Jim Steinman produced one of her most popular songs “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. This song was released back in 1983 and was Billboards number-six song of the year (Song Facts). While the song has a captivating tune, it has a lot of controversy behind the true meaning of the words. Most individuals have only heard the radio version of this song, not the full seven minutes that is on her original album. It is when you listen to the clandestine lyrics, you get a better understanding of what the song is truly about.
The music within the song is extremely powerful. It starts out slow and full of sorrow, eventually building up to a strong stance to correspond with the lyrics themselves. After rewriting certain parts of it he changed the name to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (Rheenen). The story line of the entire song is based upon a woman who is in love with a vampire. How the power of darkness can portray love in a different manner. When she states “I don’t know what to do and I’m always in the dark” is because she is only able to see him at night. Making the situation complex for her to handle as she always wants to be with him. She wants to be in love with him, yet she misses the aspect of a love life in the daylight.
