I am reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 35. This book is about a young girl named Scout who is extremely smart for her age and is punished for it. The whole town is afraid of the Radley family and their house, because of the stories. Scout is a young girl that is a little spoiled and treats others like they are less than her without knowing their backgrounds. She and her brother meet a boy named Dill who left after the summer. The town has a lot of run down places including the nice Cunninghams, and the no good Ewells. In this paper I will be predicting and evaluating.

The Ewell family is not law abiding. They hunt out of season for every animal they can find. The entire town turns a blind eye, only because every animal they get is the only food they ever get. The Ewell family has a lot of kids. The government tries to help but it does no good. When the dad gets the state funding he uses it on alcohol. He is unemployed, and is not looking for a job. Every year all of the Ewell children go to school for the first day to get their names in the system, but after the first day they never show up again. The Ewell family does not have a lot in means of clothing and food. They live out in the middle of nowhere like animals, according to Atticus they have been like that ever since the mom died a long time ago. Burris Ewell was attending the first day of school and he was filthy. He had what they call cooties or what we refer to as lice. His skin was the color of rust because of the layers of dirt. His fingernails were black and he overall seemed extremely unsanitary. I believe that Harper Lee characterized the Ewell family very well because of these reasons. He included how they are law breakers and how they use the government. He also shows us how they have to live and how they look because of the
