Although death is naturally an ending it can be seen as a beginning. Rudolpho Anaya’s Bless Me Ultima shows meaning in our surroundings and the connections we can all build with everything. Weather it be of the earth as Tony’s father Gabriel or spiritual like his mother Maria. As Tony struggles to winnow his path, the many death’s he must whiteness not only twists his world view, but changes it all together. A post war mind set burdened man, marks the first witnessed death of Tony. Frozen as he should be in that moment all he can feel is why must this happen. This bring up one titular question “what God would…?”,no answers could possibly be given. “but what hurt more was that I had whitnessed for the first time the death of a man”(chapter 2 lines 355-356). War as seen in this book kills the man that once was Lupito and the will and mental strength of a man. Lupito death is Tony’s key to the never ending hallway of questioning. Even the good of heart will go to hell if they do not believe. I’m of course talking about Florence the titular character the discussion of questioning God arises in Bless me ultima. Florence is the symbol for purity of the heart yet vitality of the mind. Like everyone else all he wants is meaning. Unfortunately on his journey his book closed, the only question we can ask is, who’s life is worth it? At this point Tony can only ask, where is God? Who allows this? Is this loss of innocence even justified? Is God justified? Florence died as he lived, drowning. The pressure of his life the weight of his choices the loss of his family and the pressure of his friends only made him sink
