In the Book of Contemplation by Usama Ibn Munqidh, The Alexiad by Anna Comnenos, and The Deeds of the Franks by Fulcher of Chartres, the perception of the Crusaders/Franks differs among each author. The similar perceptions of the Crusaders during the late 1000’s and middle 1100’s was the consistency of being courageous, greedy, violent, socially incompatible, and untrustworthy. However, the difference between the stories was Fulcher’s version of the Crusaders/Franks as being brave warriors, equal to Israelites due to God’s miracles, and not being labeled as “evil”. In the Book of Contemplation, during the early mid 1100’s to late 1100’s in the Arabian Peninsula, Usama Ibn Munqidh expresses his perception of the Franks as violent, untrustworthy, greedy, courageous, cruel, and socially incompatible. Fulcher’s perception in late 1000’s and late 1100’s in Jerusalem of the Crusaders is: brave, tactical military fighters, virtuous. Furthermore, this exemplifies Usama’s perception as quite hostile than what Fulcher perceives the Muslims. Consequently, this leads each society reflecting on the experiences they have encountered with the Crusaders/Franks by forming their own opinions of the broader Latin-Christian, Byzantine, and Muslim-ruled society.
