The Joy Luck Club, four women, who were once each four daughters, come from four different families, and have four different stories to tell the reader about. It’s 1949 and four Chinese immigrants move to San Francisco. They prepare their own dishes to share, talk story, and play mahjong. The four women speak of their pasts and reveal surprises never told before. The story follows Jing Mei Woo, who is the youngest member of the Joy Luck Club and is there to replace her recently deceased mother, the story follows her and then it disperses into the back stories of the other women. I feel that the theme of the story is that nothing is as it seems. “And below the heimongmong, all along the ground, were weeds already spilling out over the edges running wild in every direction” (Amy Chp 11), Rose is speaking metaphorically, how the edges were her misconception of her marriage and how the weeds spilling over represents the nasty, unwanted, truth behind it. That it’s not good to marry a man who walks all over you. “I wanted my children to have the best combination; American circumstances and Chinese character. How could I know these things do not mix?” (Amy Chp 15). Lindo Jong speaks of her daughter who has become fully immersed in the American lifestyle. For some reason she didn’t realize the impossibility of the two immensely diverse cultures mixing into one girl. Throughout the story many things do not go in the favor of the members of the “Joy Luck Club”. What…

Book Talk: Shiver by: Maggie Stiefvater
I initially chose to read Shiver, a fictional story by Maggie Stiefvater, because I knew that it was going to be an interesting read because everyone was talking about it when it first came out. After the first book came out then there was a second and then a third and it seemed to be the main obsession at the time. So I went and bought the first book. I remember reading the first couple of pages when I first got the book and I instantaneously…
Why Books Are Important To Children
Children all have their favourite hobbies and activities they enjoy when they have spare time. Boys prefer to play video games or have a hockey scrimmage with their friends while girls like to text on their cell phones and communicate with other friends on social media. These children are so passionate in their hobbies that they forget other things that could be beneficial in their free time. One of the most important things you can do is read a book. However…
Book Talk: Catching Fire
It takes more than hard work to get what you want. In the realistic fiction book, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen remembers back in district 12, back in the woods, back with her sister and Gale. Unfortunately, she's forced to deal with the changes that come into her life, and she has a hard time adjusting, especially when she constantly looks back and wants to return to the way things were.
There many ways of interpreting it, and getting in trouble is…
Evolution of Comics
Comic books, a dying part of our innovative society as well as other items being over looked from before the turn of the century as they are geared towards adults, technology-overtaking comics, and to recover the popularity of comics writers need to change their approach. Michael Chabon believes comic books are not written the way they used to be and are not geared towards children anymore. He also believes that if writers took a different approach, comic books would be a bigger part…
The Road Essay
The character’s experience with exile is alienating because it caused the father and son to feel far away from others and other things. The cause of this feeling was the way the world was now in the book. With the world being burnt and destroyed, not many people are alive but if they are, then they are all each other’s enemy. On an encounter with another human, the father and son hide out, run, or they fight. When they came upon the three men and the one pregnant…
Harlem is a Caldecott honored picture book written by Walter Dean Myers and illustrated by his son, Christopher Myers. The text of the picture book is poetic (it is written in blank verse) which made me hesitate to pick the book up off of the shelf, but the language paired with the wonderful illustrations really give the picture book a richness that I have never experienced when reading a children’s book before. The mix of the abstract pictures and choice words and phrases balance off…
The Book Publishing in 2010
The Book publishing industry is defined as the origin of the media and the content industry. After using papyrus as support, the first book, block of wood (codex), has been created during the 1st century. Across the centuries, this sector has experienced a lot of changes such as the printing press in 1440 by J. Gutenberg. The development of technology have enhanced the ability to improve the quality of the books, the industrial throughput and…
Maid or Mistresses
In the book the Girl with the Pearl Earring Vermeer has a reasonable, at times questionable relationship with the main character Griet, however in the movie the two share an obviously inappropriate relationship. The relationship is a highlight both the movie and the book, nevertheless portrayed very differently. In the novel the relationship is questionable at times but it never is seen as clearly inappropriate. On the other hand the movie portrays the relationship…

danger at every turn. Quincie has…
Book of James
I read the book of James and was astounded at how much I learned in such a short period of time. James encourages us to rejoice in Christ and to persevere. The main themes prevalent in this book which are wisdom, faith, trials, speech and wealth, all pertain to us today and we can use the information this book gives us to benefit from it. The book’s structure, purpose, characteristics, and history really helped teach me how to deal with the trails and temptations we as Christians…
