The Hunger Games is a popular science fiction book written by Suzanne Collins. This book is about a girl named Katniss Everdeen. She is 16 years old and has a younger 12 year old sister named Prim. When Prim is chosen to fight to the death in The Hunger Games arena, Katniss volunteers instead of her. Unfortunately Peeta Mellark is chosen too. Five years before the day of the reaping, Katniss and her family were living on mint leaves and water, slowly starving to death, until Peeta saved Katniss and her family from starving by throwing some bread from his bakery to her. One of the main places Katniss stays at is the Arena which is a manmade dome controlled by the game makers in the Capitol. The arena is a forest with lots of trees and dirt and grass. Katniss sleeps in the trees at night and uses a bow and arrow to protect herself. Another main setting is District 12 - Katniss’s home. It is the poorest of the thirteen districts in the nation of Panem. District twelve has a population of around 8,000 or more people. The main industry of the district is coal mining.

Primrose Everdeen a.k.a Prim, is Katniss’s beloved sister. Before the games, Katniss would do anything to keep her sister safe and happy, Katniss would hunt for food, and would trade at the hob for her. Katniss was also very protective of Prim and made sure that she wouldn’t have to take any tesserae so she had a lesser chance of being reaped into the Hunger Games. When Prim is reaped Katniss volunteers for her so she won’t have to be in the games.
Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’s best friend. They first met when Katniss was hunting in the woods, and nicknames her ‘Catnip’ mishearing her. They soon become hunting partners and watch out for each other in the
