Booker T. Washington was a very prominent man who lived in the nineteenth century that survived and thrived while living through adversity. The things he did not only made an impact on the lives of people in Alabama but on a grander scale the world. If it were not for Mr. Washington there might be many differences in the United States of America. While Booker T. Washington helped shape the lives of African Americans, he also helped shape every American's life. By Washington's work ethics and beliefs, he had he believed that people should work from the bottom to get to the top, he also came to the belief that people should work to gain things not have people give things to them for free if they do not deserve it. Washington was born on April 5, 1856 to an unknown white father and black slave women (“Flashfocus…). The location of his birth is on a plantation farm in Virginia (“Delving Deeper” 251). On the plantation they lived in a small cabin (Davis 27). After the Thirteenth Amendment was passed, he moved from the plantation to Malden, West Virginia with his family (“Flashfocus…”). While in Malden he started working in salt and coal mines at the young age of 10 (“Delving Deeper” 251). He also received his first bit of education while he was living in Malden (deGregory).
