Fleetwood Mac, Rumors Tour, 1977. If I could go to any concert, it would be that one. I can only imagine listening to Stevie singing “I Don’t Wanna know” or “The Chain” live. There is little doubt in my mind that the 1970s produced the best music of any decade. Whether you’re listening to Carole King, the Who, the Sex Pistols, or David Bowie, the music was raw, it was emotional, and it was simple. It had something to say, it refused to be silenced. It challenged the government; moreover, it challenged its audience.
The truth is, however, three months ago I desired more than anything to see Patti Lupone singing “Rainbow High” in Evita; three years ago, One Direction was my be all, end all. My life has been defined by short spurts of obsessions. Everything from Harry Potter to Henry IIIX and his infamous wives has been the subject of my intrigue. Each year my interests shift and I dive deep into a completely different TV show or book. While I know I will eventually leave it behind, each new curiosity becomes apart of me. Punk, disco, Broadway, and even country have all been had their own period of obsession. As each new genre is introduced, the music evokes the same feelings. The smile that sneaks onto your face as an old favorite song begins to play. The elation that comes with turning the volume on high and singing at the top of your lungs with your best friend or dancing like a crazy person in front of a mirror. The frustration of not being able to place a certain tune or the tears that form at the emergence of old memories. While I truly admire the 1970s efforts to ameliorate society, maybe the true reason I gravitated towards the era is because of nostalgia. The feeling of warm leather seats comes to mind as my parents play “Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” by Paul Simon on our six hour drives to
