Borderlands: The Chicano Movement

Borders are created to divide land and consequently groups of people. The boarder between Mexico and America lead individuals being struggling with a “double consciousness”. (DuBois) A metaphorically border within one self that poses an impossible decision. However, with the creation of borderlands arose the movement that started over 50 years ago, Chicano. Chicano refers to a space in between the borders that promotes equality along with self-determination in order to break through the pre-existing barriers and manifest a just world.
As Fregoso stated “Chicano is a space where subjectivity is produced.”() Chicano is essentially ideologies that allow individuals to create their own identities and are not fixed to a certain race. Their communities seek to build a community “that embraces all its people.” (Moraga) Chicanx most basic principles are “acceptance” and “tolerance”. () With this kind of mindset the community can result to a future where we have a world with no violence. However, this is not a fixed identity, the characteristics of the borderlands are constantly in motion.

() Cesar Chavez was a huge leader that was part of the Chicano movement and his counterpart (female counter part) played a huge role in their success. She was the backbone of the “blank”???? However, since she was female she did not receive the credit for her work. Then Chicanas started the “feminist” practice to dismantle the “patriarchy” label on their community. They Chicana’s utilized their communities practices to obtain social equality and acknowledgement within their own community. There are conflicts within the community but their ideals indicate that they want to solve these issues within the community before they attempt to solve issues outside the
