342 chests of British East India Company Tea, weighing over 92,000 pounds, were destroyed by the Sons of Liberty (Labaree) for the sake of representation for taxation. This act of rebellion was not carried aimlessly, but was done to explicitly prove disagreement with the decisions of British Parliament to levy more taxes on the colonies. Action taken by the Sons of Liberty did not go unnoticed and the British decided to punish the colonist with a series of punitive laws, later named the Intolerable Acts (“The Intolerable Acts”). Eventually the protest lead to more disagreement towards the British and drove the colonists to revolt against them. To put it into words, British parliament was very discontented with the colonies efforts against them, and wanted them to pay. The Boston Tea Party drove Britain to establish the Coercive Acts that caused more discord between them and the colonies (Bourne). The “Intolerable Acts” that were established included the: Boston Port Act, Massachusetts Government Act, Administration of Justice Act, and Quartering Act (“Milestones: 1750–1775”). These acts were a form of punishment to the colonists for their actions at the Boston Harbour. The Boston Port Act shut down the Boston Harbour, the Massachusetts Government Act granted Britain control of Massachussetts, the Administration of Justice Act protected British officials charged with capital offenses, and finally the Quartering Act made colonists not only house British soldiers, but pay for provisions and the barracks for the army.
Twelve months preceding the Boston Tea Party, Colonists became aware that their liberties were being jeopardized and rulers of Great Britain came to the conclusion that the Americans were in rebellion (Labaree). Britain kept providing the fuel that fed the colonist’s desire for independence and the flames kept getting bigger. American colonists countered Britain's control with protests and strategic resistance by forming the First Continental Congress to repeal the Intolerable Acts (Boston Tea Party
