Inside Edge has decided to review their check run process to see if there are any constraints that increase the amount of time required to complete the process. Any activity that limits the capacity of a process is known as a bottleneck (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). Careful review of the check run process revealed that the main bottleneck of the process is interruptions of the assistant controller while undertaking the process. The assistant controller’s desk is in an open cubicle area of the office building, readily accessible to anyone who walks by. While completing the process the assistant controller can face multiple interruptions which limit the capacity of the check run process. Inside Edge decides to use Goldratt’s theory of constraints to help them overcome the bottleneck in their check run process. The first step in this theory is to identify the main bottleneck, which is interrupting the assistant controller (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). The second step is deciding how to exploit the constraints (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). To do this Inside Edge constructed a queue for questions/concerns that others in the company may have for the assistant controller. This will limit the interruptions while prioritizing the issues of others in the company. The third step, subordinating everything else to this decision, will ensure
