Bottom's Misunderstood Character

Bottom is often a misunderstood character; his hilariously overt nature frequently overshadows the logical reasoning behind his actions. Bottom inadvertently makes an idiot of himself, expresses confidence regarding the wrong things, and acts as if he is aware of everything. Bottom’s self-aggrandizing personality is mistaken for comical, unwise, narrow-minded, and senseless; a closer examination, however, reveals his longing to be someone of importance and to fit in with the higher social classes.
Bottom appears to be to just a crass, mindless, pompous character who has no more than a comedic role in the play. He constantly fumbles his words trying to sound smart. Bottom uses the word “aggravate” instead of mitigate or moderate (Page 28, Line 78), “grow to a point” rather than come to a conclusion (Page 25, Line 10), “obscenely” which perhaps meant to mean unseemly (Page 34, Line 104), and even comes up with his own phrases such as “hold, or cut bowstrings” which might mean keep your words or be disgraces. Bottom also holds an extraordinary belief in his own abilities shown through his dialogues of how he thinks he is perfect for every part in the play which the commoners plan to put on.
