Humanity always seems to favor those of immense moral, even when they are to accomplish the ideal by abysmal means. In the short story “Bouki and the Cocaine” by Ben Fountain, a fisherman and his brother are all faced with prime scenarios regarding the finds of certain drug packages. One day Syto Charles, the main character and fisherman, along with his brother, Lulu, came across three sacks full of cocaine. Upon arrival of land at Marigot, Haiti, they gave the sacks of cocaine to the police, however, the police sold the cocaine for luxuries, signifying corruption. This process was reiterated when the two found more cocaine, taking it to a senator instead. Soon the senator’s gang was found driving opulent vehicles. Lulu was thoroughly irritated and began to protest against this corruption, prompting life-threatening injuries by the police. As Lulu was recuperating, Syto managed to find three more bags of cocaine; this time there had to be a decision between playing into the hands of corruption or playing the odds of morality. Not only was Syto truly opened up by this exchange, but grasped that he had an immense potential for power since he knew where the cocaine was.
