Did you know that in 2005 Green Day donated all of their iTunes financial earnings for the song Boulevard of Broken Dreams to the American Red Cross in response to hurricane Katrina. The 2004 hit Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day follows the protagonist of their preceding song; 'Jesus of Suburbia'. The Protagonist Jimmy is experiencing the horrors of being lonely on a road so empty it is called the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong exploits his song as a platform in order to highlight how depressing being alone really is. Armstrong called this song the 'hangover' song and that's pretty much what it is. This song describes the feeling of loneliness and this is evident within the first stanza of the song where it is stated "I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known". Overall, Green Day have used the elements of matter and method to create an issue of loneliness. These two elements reinforce the theme of solitude that has been formulated within matter and method to create the entire meaning. Armstrong uses strong literature to paint a vibrant image in our minds to represent the issue of loneliness and depression. The purpose of this song is to convey a message to an audience who are unfamiliar with the underlying message that there are people who walk through life alone; whether it may be the act of leaving school and pursuing your dreams on your own, the feeling of feeling lost, or just general anxiety. Loneliness and depression is an issue that any of us could face at any time. This song has a definitive meaning. It is relatable in terms of going through certain parts of life on your own and could be an example correlating next year for the grade 12 cohort, I encourage you to follow your dreams whether you walk in solitude or
