Measuring Boxes and Data Presentation Lab

Introducton
Dr. Tibbitt has purchased a koa wood ruler from a reputable online company and used it to determine the volume of seven cardboard boxes. The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to measure these boxes using a standard Westcoh DH2E ruler to determine the accuracy of Dr. Tibbitt’s new ruler. Since Dr. Tibbitt has purchased the koa ruler from a reputable company, it is likely that the koa ruler will be accurate.

Procedure
Dr. Tibbitt had placed seven boxes on various benches in the laboratory. Each box had been labeled with a letter A through G, and was labeled with a volume that had been calculated by Dr. Tibbitt using measurements taken with the koa wood ruler. Record measurements of length, width, and height with a standard (Westcoh DH2E) rulers.

Data
Refer to Table 1 below for measurements.

Table 1. Box measurements.

Results
The volume and percent difference of each box has been calculated with the data from Table 1 above. The calculated values are shown in the Table 2 on the next page. The percent difference of the student’s volume vs. instructor’s volumes has been calculated and is shown on an X and Y scatter plot in Figure 1 on the following page. The volume calculated with the Westcoh DH2E ruler of each box is then compared with the instructors calculated volumes and is shown graphically in Figure 2 on the following page.
