The Boxer Rebellion was an antiforeign and antimodern peasant uprising that lasted from 1898 to 1900. But it was also a clash of cultures brought about by western economic imperialism and Christian missionary activity.
The Boxers United in Righteousness, or Yihequan, started as a secret society in northern china and was composed of mainly farmers, poor people, laborers, and other peasants. They were called “Boxers” by the westerners because of their physical fitness and martial arts that they practiced. These Boxers believed that spirit possession and martial arts would be enough to protect them from bullets and cannons, and would allow them to defeat the foreigners.
