BP’s Code of Ethics: Our Commitment to Integrity

A company’s code of ethics is a written set of guidelines issued by an organization to its workers and management to help them conduct their actions in accordance with its primary values and ethical standards. A code of ethics is essential for the professional functioning of a business. I have chosen to analyze BP’s code of ethics.
BP’s code of ethics main statement is as follows “The BP code of conduct stands for a fundamental BP commitment – to comply with all applicable legal requirements and the high ethical standards set out in this code – wherever we operate. In my opinion this Code of Ethics is very detailed and covers every aspect need to properly function and represent the BP name. I have personally experienced many years of adhering to this code of ethics. I have previously worked for BP for almost 8 years. I started out as a cashier and moved my way up the ladder to hold my final position of Café Manager and Regional Training Manager for the New York market. When I was hired I was given a large handbook containing this code of ethics. The book was very large and I remember just throwing it in the back of my car after being hired and it was never opened. At 16 years old and being a cashier I had no desire to read over 80 pages of “stuff” that I didn’t think was relevant to me. Less than two years later I was promoted to manager and this book of “stuff” became just a bit more important. I was now required to read and sign off that I read the company’s code of ethics. I now realized that as a manager I would be leading a team of people and be required to follow certain guidelines. I was amazed that while reading this code of ethics, there were many statements and policies that I had already became familiar with.
