One positive thing I would like to identify in the interaction would be Ms. Jones willingness to speak with the doctor and find a solution to the situation. One negative aspect of the interaction is the doctor’s racial biases and stereotyping of Ms. Jones by stating “you people have your ways” and then when Ms. Jones asked her to clarify what she meant by saying “you people” she stated “people who have trouble with child protective services.”

If I were in Ms. Jones position I would feel angry and ignored. I would address the situation by requesting a new doctor. A doctor who would listen rather make judgments. A doctor who would be interested in learning more about me, my culture, my family, my up bringing, and work together with me to find a solution so I do not end up involved with child protective services again.

If I were in the doctors’ position I would want to know more about Ms. Jones and what are the reasons that brought her to my office. The way I would address these feelings is following some of the steps outlined in Brammers book Diversity in Counseling on pages 92 and 93

In the video ABC’s What Would You Do (Bike Thief), Dr. Dovidio states at 5:46 that “these racial stereotypes are infused in all of us, its part of our culture. Weather you are black or white you associate crime with black and white with being good.” People both male and female were swarming around him stopping and gathering making comments and telling him what he was stealing and what he was doing was wrong.
