In a dystopia containing a rigid class structure and little individuality, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley presents a society that creates a cautionary work for modern society to follow. The society within the World State operates on a caste system throughout all levels of work. This caste system predisposes individuals at random for different classes during birth and it controls how each person will act before he or she steps out of the test tube. Society encompasses the rich and the poor which are two major social classes on opposite sides of society. The majority of the members in the rich social class lives upon luxury, pleasure, and wants. On the other hand, the majority of the poor social class tries to survive and find a meal for each and every day. In this society, the rich individuals want to stay where they are and be comforted with their own wealth and security. By having these individuals stay within their boundaries, they begin to “‘behave like people who actually do have more power, more money, and more status,’ says Paul Piff” (Miller). The rich individuals allow themselves to stick together in a certain area or place where they feel the same with other people. They do not want to associate themselves with the poor individuals for how different they are. This is similar to how the World State caste system caused the individuals to make Linda an outlier for her differences. Modern society cushions itself into specific social classes to separate from others. The majority of wealthy people do not wish to be live with different people of social status which is the same as to how everyone did not associate themselves with Linda. The caste system within the World State was a key component in oppressing individual differences in each caste in society. Likewise, in modern society, the social classes of the rich and poor compares from how the rich oppress the major differences of the poor and avoid them. This is a current problem in society that has always been present for thousands of years. Looking at the past, these major differences in status and oppression by the wealthy has caused major revolutions and revolts ranging from colonial America to communist Russia. In this modern society of innovations and technology, there is an ever-increasing gulf between the employed working class and the poor individual (Collins 302). The social classes are becoming separated in wealth through the years and for the future, there will most likely be a revolt of some kind by the extremely poor people. Brave New World shows us a glimpse into what a society can turn into if the revolts keep happening in the future. It provides a warning for people to understand and follow now before it is too late. The way in which the caste system oppresses individual differences in Brave New World is a beneficial aspect to understand in order to not make the same mistake and create a solution to this ever-growing
