A veterans group called AMVETS had its Super Bowl ad rejected after the NFL deemed it to be too political.

The ad, which would have run in the Super Bowl program distributed to attendees of the game, showed a military honor guard holding the American flag and the hashtag #PleaseStand at the top of the page.

"The Super Bowl program is designed for fans to commemorate and celebrate the game, players, teams, and the Super Bowl," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement about the decision to reject the ad. "It has never been a place for advertising that could be considered by some as a political statement."

AMVETS National Commander Marion Polk criticized the decision in a Jan. 22 letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
