“Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless when facing them.” - Rabindranath Tagore “Courage is not an emotion or a trait but a kind of fear in which you are fearless.” That's how I would define courage. Courage is not just a trait or simple bravery but something with multiple layers and “species”. One kind of courage is Social/Moral courage. This is the courage needed to stand up for others in a situation that may not make you “popular”. It mostly benefits others and could be defined as “selfless courage”. Leslie is a 10 year old girl, and an only child. She moved to a new town and a new school at the beginning of the year. She has no friends, until she meets her neighbor Jess. At first he is not very friendly towards her after she beat him in a school race, but he eventually decides to be kind to her despite his peers thoughts of her. It doesn't take long for them to become best friends. Leslies actions were always selfless and for the best of others. She stood up to bullies, helped kids younger than her, and was never shy or afraid to be herself. Leslie exhibited Social/ moral courage when she stood up to Janice Avery, the meanest bully at school. She was totally selfless and kind to Jess’ sister, May Belle. May Belle needed to go to the bathroom and Janice Avery was blocking the door and threw away her stuffed animal. Leslie was totally ready and willing to stand up to the bully for the benefit of others. This moment was very important to the story because in my opinion, this greatly impressed Jess and was a part of the reason they became
