Pressure on Marriage, Being Single, and Judgement from Other Women
Romantic comedies are about people falling in love, but how the characters go about finding this so called love is what has the harmful effects on the female audiences. The harmful effect is the pressures to stay within female gender roles. One of the biggest pressures romantic comedies force on Women is being obsessed with love lives and relationship status. Instead being content in their singleness spinsters long for having a husband, and family. A perfect example of a spinster or single women who is obsessed with finding love can be seen in the movie Bridget Jones’s Diary. The film follows the story of Bridget Jones a 32 year old woman who is preoccupied with the notion of finding the perfect guy before her time runs out. One of the biggest pressure to marry in these films comes from friends and family. Bridget mom is constantly trying to set Bridget up on dates and nagging about her love life. Besides the family pushing the idea of marriage, Bridget faces more pressure in her social circle. One night Bridget is at a dinner party with all her married friends. They inquire about her love life and her boyfriend. She confessed that they are not together anymore. In repose one of the husband tell her that she needs to hurry up and get herself a man. It is a social norm to want to be married.
