The novel, Letters From Rifka, is a historical fiction novel that takes place around September 2, 1919. The main character, Rifka Nebrot was an infant when her three brothers, Isaac, Rueben, and Asher fled from Russia because they didn’t want to get killed by the Russian army for declining the mandatory participation. Rifka is a blond, Jewish girl who narrates this story written by Karen Hesse. She tells her story by writting letters to her cousin Tovah. Letters From RIfka hooks any readers that like to read about adventures. Rifka Nebrot is the only daughter out of her family of 8. Therefore, the Nebrots ran away from Berdichev, Russia to Poland to purchase tickets for a steamship ride to the United States. While they were in Poland, Rifka caught ringworm while she was braiding a ladies hair. Furthermore, Rifka was not allowed to go to America until the ringworm was gone. Now, Rifka’s family had to go to America without her and she had to go to a foster home in Antwerp, Belgium. In addition, while Rifka was in Belgium, she met a lot of new people and also discovered new varieties food. For example, Rifka tasted bananas, chocolate, and ice cream for the first time.
