When I was fifteen years old there was a time my grit was tested. Our neighbor had an american bulldog that had bit me in the past and it had came back to our house, so my dad tried to throw a basketball at it to get it away from my sisters and I. The neighbor, Alan Fife had seen that and came out and started yelling at my dad and punched him right in the face. I ran into the garage to grab a golf club and I ran back out and started hitting our neighbor with it all the way down the street yelling at him and crying at the same time. The police came because my mom had called them as this all happened. I had sent that man to the emergency room and he was taken to jail right after. I believe this relates to Mattie Ross because my father was in danger and I felt I was the one that needed to protect him and make the man pay for what he had just done to my own dad. My adrenaline was rushing through my body after I had just realized what I did but I had shown grit and toughness that day.

Early in the first few pages Mattie explains her father’s death and how her father, Frank Ross, tries to stop Chaney from making irrational decisions after he thought he was being cheated. Chaney takes his rifle and shoots Frank who was unarmed at the time right in the forehead. Mattie claims, “My father was not armed at that time. Tom Chaney raised his rifle and shot him in the forehead killing him instantly...He but a bridle on Papa’s horse Judy and rode out bareback. Darkness swallowed him up.” (Portis 16) Chaney shows a lack of grit because of the simple fact after he killed Frank Ross he robbed him of his money and took his horse and rode off, not willing to face the consequences and shooting a man out of
