Brother Depicted In Sonny's Blues

The most emulated mentor from “Sonny’s Blues” was Sonny’s brother. Sonny’s brother was the father figure to Sonny. He was confided by the promise that he made to his mother and that was to look out for his brother. Although, Sonny’s brother knew he wasn’t quite keeping up with his promise there came a downfall that transpired. Sonny’s brother overcame the downfall by staying open-minded, smart, and caring.
Sonny’s brother was an open-minded person. Sonny went through a lot with his brother when his mother passed. Sonny’s brother was an algebra teacher at a high school. According to requirements in being a math teacher, a master’s degree, teaching certification and bachelor’s degree is required and that is what Sonny’s brother has earned. He wasn’t just book smart; he was also street smart. He grew up in Harlem and he knew what the streets held for children he taught in school and children that were seen late at night. According to the book “Sonny’s Blues” he said “These boys, now, were living as we'd been living then, they were growing up with a rush and their heads bumped abruptly against the low ceiling of their actual possibilities.” Sonny’s brother knew that there wasn’t much to look up to when it came to boys in Harlem, there was a little chance of ever "making something" of themselves. He wasn’t quite certain he knew who his brother was but he was sure that he was not like the others. According to the book, “Sonny Blues” he started to reminisce about Sonny which stated, “I was remembering, and it made it hard to catch my breath, that I had been there when he was born; and I had heard the first words he had ever spoken….” That made it clear that he cared about his brother and he wanted him to do better. According to the book, “Sonny Blues”, there came a time when Sonny had first became an musician and he wanted to convince him to do better but all it led to was arguments but the last time in which he had a conversation with his brother he mentioned that it was best if he was dead, because of the way he was carrying himself. After that last argument, he walked out the doors and began to cry. Therefore, that statement said that Sonny’s brother wanted what was best for his little brother. In the ending on Sonny’s Blues, Sonny wanted his brother to attend the night in which he would be performing and out of love and care he attended to see what his brother worked around and how influential it was to him due to his drug addiction.
