Brother In 'The Scarlett Ibis'

“The Scarlett Ibis,” is a short story about two young brothers and their lives. One brother, Doodle, is physically disabled and can’t walk. His brother (whose name is unknown and is referred to as Brother) is not disabled and has lots of athleticism in him. Brother deeply envies Doodle because of how much attention Doodle gets instead of himself. Doodle always seems to be the reason Brother can’t do much. Their mom always asks of Brother to, “Take Doodle with you,” and Brother never really wants to. The things Brother did required much more physicality than Doodle had. This meant Brother would have to drag Doodle around wherever he went. Brother just doesn’t like Doodle’s disability and Brother is just ashamed of having Doodle as a brother. …show more content…
In one part of the story, Doodle’s brother shows Doodle his coffin that he was supposed to be buried in. Doodle says to never leave him and Brother says, “Of course.” Brother then realizes that school is coming up soon and that Doodle will be going. Brother thinks about how this will effect him and decides to try and teach Doodle to walk. This takes several weeks but Doodle, finally, can walk. Doodle shows the rest of his family and claims that Brother taught him. The family begins to hug Brother and Brother starts to cry. His father asked why he was crying. Brother responded with, “I don’t know.” Instead, in his mind, he thinks about how he didn’t want to be embarrassed when school began and taught Doodle out of self-pity.
