Essay: The people of the 1400s’ wanted to build a dome over their beloved cathedral. Though no one had any clue as to how they could accomplish this task. They had so many questions, that they didn’t really even know where to start. How do you build a dome as vast as the one that they need? How would it be possible to get that said dome on top of the cathedral walls? Could the walls hold the weight of the dome without the proper support it needs? Were there enough resources to create the dome? How could the shape of the base support the dome without caving in? These questions lead the Florentine fathers to conduct a contest for architects to come up with ideas for the dome. His colleagues knew that “He’d just spent several years in Rome measuring and sketching the ancient monuments and noting, in cipher, their architectural secrets. Indeed, Brunelleschi’s life seemed to have been one long apprenticeship for building the dome of unequaled beauty, usefulness, honor, and power that Florence yearned for.” (Mueller, Paragraph 6) The construction took over 16 years. He invented a pulley system that was strong enough to do the job. He invented the “castello, a 65-foot tall crane.” (Mueller, Paragraph 10) He influenced some of Leonardo De Vinci’s’ work. Brunelleschi helped the Renaissance grow and flourish. I learned a lot from this assignment. I learned that it is better to form questions before trying to do something. It is a good idea to gather people together to form hypothesis and work together. You need to rely on others for help because some projects are too
