In Brutus’ speech to Cassius, he is furious because Cassius suspects that Brutus has wronged him. Brutus’ goal in his speech is to show Cassius that his threats do not scare him and to explain that Cassius wronged him since he did not help a brother when he needed it. Brutus knows he would help Cassius by any means, but he now supposes Cassius is no longer a friend. As a result of this speech, Brutus wishes for Cassius to realize he is the guilty man and to change his actions. Brutus’ argument is when he asked for gold to pay his soldiers, Cassius wouldn’t give it to him. He is outraged, a brother would not help another brother in a time of need. Brutus speaks of himself as an honest man that would not take money from the peasants. He would not use crooked tactics to take the money of the diligent peasants. The noble Brutus, emphasized his point by making Cassius feel guilty and ashamed, especially when Cassius was the person who began a fight with Brutus. The links that Brutus connects with is the topic of hoarding money from petty peasants and not helping him pay his soldiers. Brutus is convincing in his speech as he explains that Cassius has been acting strange and accuses Cassius of the action he has committed. He defines why he was upset with Cassius and the actions of Cassius are not acceptable in a time of war. Brutus is a credible speaker because from his point of view, Cassius had been possessive of money even though he is aware that Brutus cannot raise money by unethical means to pay his soldiers.
