“The shot heard around the world” occurred near the Buckman Tavern in Lexington, Massachusetts. Buckman Tavern, owned by the town, was one of Lexington’s busiest taverns during the 18th century. It was located on the Battle Green, which is an adjacent field. This tavern is most associated with the American Revolution’s first battle in Lexington and Concord which was a skirmish between the town militia and British on April 19, 1775. This skirmish was the beginning of the armed struggle for American independence. It played an integral part to the events of the American Revolution including that it was a headquarters for the militia.
It is a 2-story framed building that is now one of the oldest standing hostelries in the United States. It began building in 1690 and was constructed by Benjamin Muzzy who licensed it as a public house three years later. By 1710, the tavern was a gathering place for important town meetings including the Minute Men. Its name derives from John Buckman who, in 1775, was the building’s proprietor and a Minute Men member of the Lexington company. I thought it would be interesting to research a historical place, as opposed to making one up, because I could learn at the same time I was working. Plus, I didn’t considerate myself a creative person when it comes to writing an original story. When picking the place, I recalled the time of my trip to Massachusetts where my family went past Lexington.
