Theme in The Call of the Wild In The Call of the Wild written by Jack London, survival is a major theme in the story. Surviving is an important task that takes many strong characteristics. Buck faces many challenges and frightening times. These challenges brought out some of the best characteristics within Buck. Buck’s strength helped him to survive through the challenges he faced. Buck was smart, and that is just as important as being strong. Buck also learned to adapt to unknown conditions in order to survive. One must be strong, smart, and learn to adapt to harsh conditions in order to survive. Buck’s strength helped him to survive through the challenges he faced. Buck went through many hard times in the story but his strength kept him alive and well. The story states “Among the terriers he stalked imperiously, and Toots and Ysabel he utterly ignored, for he was king…” Jack London is telling us that Buck was strong in the aspect of being brave and knowing he could take on anything, which gave him confidence. Buck’s strength also helped him when Curly was killed.
