The movie The Matrix can be interpreted from a Buddhist perspective in many different ways. Buddhism's main reason for why we suffer is because of desire. Unless you're like Buddha and you're able to reach nirvana, you're like the rest of us suffering. Neo was like the rest of us. He suffered because he desired to be more and he was eager to know what the matrix was. When Neo wakes up in the pod that's when he realizes that everyone around him is suffering as well. He realized everyone suffers for the same reason because we are all controlled by our desires and our fears. This is a parallel to Buddha.
