Have you ever wondered what memory would flash before your eyes as you die? “Bullet in the Brain” by Tobias Wolff, explains how while Anders was dying what memory passed before his eyes as a bullet passed through his brain. Anders is standing in line at the bank conversing with two women in front of him at the displeasure of one of the bank tellers closing her booth while there is a long line of people. While this is going on a group of people in black ski masks holding guns come to rob the bank, and start shouting. Anders proceeds to critique their every move and everything the bank robbers are saying, which causes him to get into some trouble and one of the robbers puts a gun to his head and shoots a bullet through his brain. The story then leads the reader through the memories that did not flash before his eyes, and what did flash before his eyes. In the end it will do its work and leave the troubled skull behind, dragging its comet’s tail of memory and hope and talent and love into the marble hall or commerce. That can’t be helped. But for now Anders can still make time. Time for the shadows to lengthen on the grass, time for the tethered dog to bark at the flying ball, time for the boy in right field to smack his sweat-blackened mitt and softly chant, They is, They is, They is.” (Wolff, Tobias). This quote backs up the previous quote, Anders is intrigued with the fact the little boy from Mississippi said “they is”. Anders is absolutely entranced with how the cousin spoke, and this proves it by him repeating the phrase over and over again. This is the moment that lead him down the path to becoming a critique because he had a knack for noticing flaws and he enjoyed it. Anders found pleasure in the grammatical error. He died but to him, this was a good memory. He was happy to remember
