According to the stop bullying.gov website bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Statistics has shown that 19.6% of high school students in the US report being bullied at school in the past year while 14.8% reported being bullied online. More statistics also showed that 64 percent of children who were bullied did not report it; only 36 percent reported the bullying. Bullying can be classified into the physical bullying or cyber bulling. Physical bullying can be in terms of physical abuse while cyber bullying has to do with bullying over the Internet or even through text messages, where the …show more content…
The New York Times wrote an article on April 10th 2015 reporting how a transgender teenage girl in California killed herself because she was bullied. “Taylor Alesana was constantly picked on by peers before taking her life last week, the North County LGBTQ Resource Center said”(NYT). It was stated that the bullying began in middle school when she announced that she was bisexual. She also said that she made a couple of friends but that she went from group to group and once they found out she was different they would not hang around her anymore. Another of preventing bullying especially cyber bullying is by speaking up when we see something, lets stand up and fight for people that are being bullied when we see it; and this goes perfectly with the popular saying that states that when we see something we should say something. As a parent you can also prevent bullying by watching out for signs such as injuries and marks on our kids bodies. Parents should also try to talk to their kids and find out what is going on with them at school.Parents should alos teach their kids how to act when they get bullied so they would be emotionally prepared so they wont feel emotionally crushed or defeated. The most important thing parents should do when it comes to cyber bullying is to set boundaries with technology by “educating your children and yourself about cyber bullying and teach your children not to respond or forward threatening emails. “Friend” your child on Facebook or MySpace and set up proper filters on your child’s computer. Make the family computer the only computer for children, and have it in a public place in the home where it is visible and can be monitored…let them know you will be monitoring their text messages. As a parent, you can insist that phones are stored in a public area, such as the kitchen, by a certain time at night to eliminate nighttime
