On April 21, 1836 Sam Houston, General of the Texan army, launched a surprise attack on Generalissimo Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s mexican army near present day San Jacinto river as an act to declare Texas Independence. The Battle of San Jacinto was the last militant event of the Texas Revolution.
Volunteers arrived from the u.s to aid the Texas army. The Texas army flourished to an army of about 1,200. The Texans stood with stronger odds against the mexicans.
After getting word of the location of the mexican army General Houston’s army began to move towards their camp. Santa Anna’s army was unprepared for attack and no sentries were placed.The Texans movements were screened by rising ground and trees. The Texans had a large advantage engaging the mexican army with the aid of surprise.

The artillery under George W. Hockley on right of Burleson. The infantry was under Henry Miller on the right of the artillery and the cavalry was under Mirabeau B. Lamar on extreme right. Two cannons named the twin sisters were wheeled into position. The whole line lead by Sherman's men sprang forward on the line with the cry, “Remember the Alamo!” “Remember Goliad!”
The battle lasted but eighteen minutes. The total number of deaths from the battle resulted in 639 with only nine deaths on the texans side and 630 on the mexicans side. Houston took a musket ball to the ankle during the fight. No texans were taken prisoner, but 730 were taken on the mexican
