The Indians had many battles with the white men throughout the book Bury My Heart at Wounded knee. The government had mistreated the Indians is many ways, such as: not giving them their portions, taking their land, and making them live the way the whites wanted them to live. The U.S. government lied and gave false treaties to the Native Americans, resulting in battles.

The white soldiers would not give the Indians their food because they soldiers have not received their money from the government, which is not the Indians fault because they cannot control the government, so they should get their rations. “In July several thousand Santees assembled at the Upper Agency on Yellow Medicine River to collect their amenities, which were pledged by the treaties, so that they might exchange them for food” (Brown 39) To make this situation not be a problem the white soldiers could of gave the Indians their supplies and gave them at least small amounts of supplies till they got their money, but they cut the Indians off completely. There was one situation where wanted to make a road going right through the Indian land. The white soldiers kept making new treaties, so they could take the Indians land, but this time the treaty wasn't even signed when they started building a road through their land. In the book, it states “Commissioner Taylor decided to introduce him to the chiefs and quietly inform them of what they already knew-that the government intended to open a road through the Powder River country regardless of the treaty” (Brown 129). The soldiers could have done so many things differently in the situation like, building the road around the land or waiting till the Indians sign the treaty.
