It has come to my attention, recently, that some high schools don’t require their students to take a business course. Some may think that these courses are irrelevant, but business classes give students skills that they will need and use to be successful when they are on their own in the real world, so all students should be required to take a course when they are in high school. Although there are reasons that business courses aren’t considered mandatory, like the fact that there are courses that some think are more important and need to be funded and taken by students rather than the business ones, there are many more reasons that they should stay and be available to all students, such as preparing students for success in their futures, …show more content…
Both of these fellow chapter members of mine competed at the FBLA national level with me in 2015. FBLA is clearly a business club, and although Mikias and Sierra want to go into fields other than the business field, they still valued the club and made it past the district and the state level; Sierra in business ethics and Mikias in marketing. Competitions and conferences that FBLA members attend, like the ones that we did, include “workshops, seminars, exhibits, and general sessions” and when we were at these events we also got to network among other FBLA peers from other schools, cities and states which helped us with our communication and confidence skills (FBLA-PBL). This decision outraged students who participated in the business program, and me because as a student who was on the business path at that school, and still continue on it, I am so grateful to have picked up the skills that I have while I was there. That school’s decision to take away the business department was made to make room for a different pathway that more students were taking part of, which was the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) pathway. Science and math abilities are very relevant, yes, and if STEM courses help pick up students abilities in these two subjects they would have more potential to be successful in the future. STEM should be offered earlier on in life because math and science skills are important for getting through high school as well as college, and if it is offered sooner, then this would make room for a business pathway and more business courses and clubs in high school. Students can be involved in STEM courses to prepare them for the STEM field, and they can also be involved in business courses if they plan to go into the STEM field, but a student may not benefit as much from the STEM courses if they plan to go into the business field
