In order to understand one’s cultural identity, he or she needs to understand what the term means. According to one source, cultural identity can be defined as “We all have unique identities that we develop within our cultures, but these identities are not fixed or static” (Trumbull and Pacheco 10). Someone in the community always has something to say or criticize you about any little thing you do or say. “And after seeing my mother’s disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die” (Tan 223). She did what she was suppose to do, but the crowd booed her sparsely, made her cry and demoralize her. She should be motivated by this and try harder even if the crowd booed her after what happen. “Soon after my mother got this idea about Shirley Temple, she took me to a beauty training school in the Mission district and put me in the hands of a student who could barely hold the scissors without shaking” (Tan 221).
