This quote by Albert Einstein is true on so many levels in the story By the Water of Babylon. The characters in this story are John (the son of a priest), John’s Father(priest), John’s brothers(hunters), and the forest people. The author is Stephen Vincent Benet and in his book technology has destroys society. Technology has helped destroy society both physically and with knowledge.
Technology can destroy society in many physical ways. For instance, in the story By the Waters of Babylon, society is destroyed in a physical way. John the narrator said “It was fire falling out of the sky and a mist that poisoned.

For example, in this short story, society was destroyed because they had too much knowledge. The narrator says “ I have learned that, being a priest. Perhaps, in the old days, they ate knowledge too fast”(272). It states that because they ate knowledge too fast, it was what destroyed society. They ate knowledge too fast and that led to the great destruction, and that was how society was destroyed with knowledge. Additionally, there was another example about society being destroyed by society. John states that “ I saw them with wisdom beyond wisdom and knowledge beyond knowledge”(271). They had tons of wisdom and tons of knowledge. Having too much wisdom and knowledge isn’t always a good thing, and because they had tons of knowledge, they used it too much and then destroyed society with it. To summarize, the people before John’s time consumed knowledge too fast. With all that knowledge they ended up destroyed society. To conclude, technology can be dangerous and destroy society.
