What comes to mind when you think of the first World War? To begin, the Cabaret Voltaire was the name of a nightclub in Zürich. The club was in neutral Switzerland where most people went to, to avoid the war. The club was founded by Hugo Ball and his friend Emmy Hennings. Besides Ball and Hennings there were also a few other artists who performed at the club. The club was a way for artists to perform dance, perform spoken word, and to perform music. In addition, the nightclub, was named after French Philosopher Voltaire for a few reasons. One reason the club was named after the French Philosopher was the values his name had represented. The artist’s name had great value which made the name acceptable for the club name. The word means the style and technique which a group or artist has. The word “Dada” ends up having multiple meanings depending on the place or county an individual is at. The Dada artists “were very aware…they were bringing something from outside the Occidental Culture.” What the documentary is trying to say here is that the Dada artist were bringing something outside of western with the intentions to support meaninglessness. The artist just wanted to “Dada” activities in which the Cabaret Voltaire allowed them to do. Furthermore, when an individual looks at the artwork of Picasso and the artwork of Dada artist they can see similarities in their work. The Dada artists seem to have incorporated the collage/still life parts of Picasso’s Cubist work. When a person looks at some of Picasso’s artwork they see the important parts of his daily life. What Dada artists have done with their artwork is, add a touch of Picasso which can be noticed on a few of their
