The Caenorhabditis elegans (figure1) is a multicellular, very small, free living nematode which survives by feeding on bacteria. We could manipulate this organism easily and inexpensively. It is also considered to be a great model organism for these features. The father of C. elegans research Sydney Brenner had a greater understanding for C. elegans as s model organism. He uses C. elegans on his neuronal development researches after conducting a forward genetic screen when he recognizes over 600 mutations (lab manual, p71). By looking over figure 2, we could realize that there are two sexes of C. elegans. A self-fertilizing hermaphrodite, that consider to be females but they produce sperm (XX) and they have 959 somatic cells. On the other hand, we have the male C. elegans (X0) with 1031 somatic cells and they are smaller and thinner than the hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodite reproduce asexually and there is 50% chance of having male when male mates with a Hermaphrodite and a 1% if it mates with male. C. elegans have a very simple nerves system which consists of 302 neurons. Additionally, C. elegans have a very rapid life style as well as a very short reproductive system. Thus, we have to monitor carefully the temperature to be approximately 20°C-25°C in order for this C. elegans to develop and grow up normally. Roughly. C. elegans take 3 days to finish its 3 development periods including embryogenesis, morphogenesis (has 4 larval stages L1- L4), and growth to an adult. During these stages we have to monitor the temperature, otherwise, the worms might die or it might go through “hibernation” stage. C. elegans also was a very useful organism in many researches such as RNAi researches and it was the first animal to have its genome sequence and thus decently helps us to understand human beings genome since there are 35% similarities in these genomes.
