Located across the Mississippi River from modern-day St. Louis is Cahokia it is thought to be mostly an Indian city and was the largest pre-Columbian city north of Mexico. David Reynolds writes “Cahokia is the biggest prehistoric earthwork still surviving anywhere in the Americas.” (Reynolds, 2009) There have been no written writings or words found to help understand more about the city of Cahokia so we rely on archaeologists to tell us about the people and how they may have functioned during that time period. Cahokia was a city that was at its peak from 1050-1200 A.D., and it was larger than many European cities. According to archaeological finds it became abandoned by the 1400’s.
