A rookie sensation takes the MLB by storm by hitting safely in his first 16 at bats. No one has ever seen a player quite like Joe Castle, and his unbelievable talent at the sport of baseball. Joe is gaining fame, and dominating the league, until one day he is tragically hit by a pitch thrown at his head and went on to never play the game of baseball again. In the story Calico Joe by John Grisham, I was able to identify the three most important objects being Paul Tracey’s scrapbook, a baseball, and the Sports Illustrated cover with Joe Castle
I feel the first important object in Calico Joe is Paul Tracey’s scrapbook. Paul did not have a very pleasant childhood as his father was not a benefactor at all. He was an indomitable hitter who rarely struck out. CRACK, the sound Joe’s bat made when he would crush a ball into the bleachers for a home run. :) (Onomatopoeia) Joe’s cover appearance meant a lot not only to Joe Castle, but to his hometown of Calico Rock, and Paul Tracey. The cover inspired Paul to watch and play the game of baseball. His hometown of Calico Rock could never have been more proud of him. The magazine cover also earned him his nickname of Calico Joe. “His biceps were sufficiently flexed- it was the look of raw power. The bold caption above his head read “Calico Joe”” (Grisham 75). The nickname would stick with Joe for the rest of his playing days, and beyond. This was more than just a normal magazine cover. The cover means that people such as Paul had a person to look up to. It also means that even though you are from a small town, does not mean you can not succeed. Calico Joe was a huge icon for all who followed him, and the cover was a very important item in the
